Reagan Day Dinner Set for February 7!


Help the Orange County Republican Party celebrate Ronald Reagan's birthday! We have two special speakers for the evening.


Professor Mike Adams, Townhall.com columnist and criminal justice professor from UNC-Wilmington will join us on his way to the CPAC conference in Washington DC. (CPAC stands for "Conservative Political Action Conference".) Adams has singlehandedly been fighting the liberal demons of diversity and multiculturalism at UNC Wilmington. Also, Augustus Cho, outgoing chairman of the Orange County Republican Party and Candidate for Congress, 4th District, will be on hand to give us a special message in honor of President Ronald Reagan. To learn more about Cho's candidacy, go to his website, www.choforcongress.com.

 Cho announces GOP stand – Land Tax is a Bad Idea


Selling your house?  If legislation proposed by Democratic legislators makes it through the North Carolina General Assembly, then a new land transfer tax would take one percent of the selling price out of your equity.

Augustus Cho, chairman of the Orange County Republican Party announced today that the Executive Committee of the Orange County GOP officially opposes this new tax.  “For most people, their home is their primary asset.  They are already paying property taxes every year.  Placing this new tax on families and retirees is unfair,” stated Cho.

Virginia Ferguson, a member of the Orange County GOP Executive Committee, added:  “This new tax would be regressive.  Lower income individuals have proportionally more of their assets tied up in their homes than those with higher incomes, therefore a tax on the selling price of their home would represent a greater percentage of their net worth.” 

Mrs. Ferguson continued, "Besides, anything that increases the price of housing in North Carolina makes our area less attractive for new businesses looking to move to our state.  As a source of revenue, such a tax would be unreliable, because when the housing market turns down, revenues will decline along with it.”  There are currently 15 different bills proposed in the legislature, one by Orange County Representative Verla Insko that would give counties the option to impose the tax. 

“Instead of creating new taxes on homeowners, legislators should be working towards decreasing the burden on the taxpayer,” commented Martha Jenkins, chairman of the Fourth Congressional District Republican Party and a member of the Orange County GOP Executive Committee.  “Local governments are being squeezed because in North Carolina, unlike most states, local governments are required to pick up Medicaid payments.” 

Mrs. Jenkins continued, “It was announced this week that tax revenues are coming in at a record pace, which will produce a budget surplus.  We call upon Speaker Hackney and the North Carolina General Assembly to use this surplus to supplement the local governments’ share of Medicaid, instead of funding ineffective social programs and causing local governments to search for new revenue sources."

“We already have a lack of affordable housing in Orange County,” added Augustus Cho.  “A new tax will have the effect of increasing home prices.  Increased costs to the seller will mean that the prices of homes will be similarly inflated.”  Cho concluded, “North Carolina does not have a revenue problem; it has a spending problem.”

St. Senator Fred Smith Visits Orange County for a BBQ!

On August 13th (Monday), 2007, St. Senator Fred Smith came to Orange County for a BBQ stop.

Senator Smith is running for Governor of North Carolina (2008). He is one of the three Republican Party candidates seeking the Office.

Augustus Cho, Chair of the Orange County Republican Party (OCGOP), led off the special event by arranging an interview for Senator Smith with the Chapel Hill News. Samuel Spies, a staff writer for the News & Observer and the Chapel Hill News, interviewed him. It lasted about 45 minutes. Difificult questions were asked and answered. Part of the interview was also recorded for viewing on the Chapel Hill News’ broadcasting.

The interview was on the front page of the August 15th issue of the newspaper.

Then Sandra Dunphy, 1st Vice-Chair of OCGOP, hosted an elegant, private gathering for the Senator at her residence. Those fortunate enough to be present had the opportunity to ask the St. Senator a number of questions on what he would do as Governor of our state.

At 6:30, an evening reception for Fred Smith for Governor BBQ took place at the Big Barn in Hillsborough. The Chairman of the OCGOP was asked to MC the event.

The dinner began with the invocation by a local pastor, Gary Webb. Alasdair Cho, a local high school student, led the Pledge of Allegiance after asking all to remember the men & women in uniform serving our nation around the world.

Alexa Young, a student from the Smith Middle School, was invited to sing the National Anthem. She sang acapella, beautifully. Senator Smith, who spoke and addressed various issues and matters, followed a wonderful meal of BBQ.

Overall, August 13th was a busy but a productive day for both the candidate running for the office of Governor and the Orange County Republican Party.

A special “Thank you” goes out to all the Republicans, young and old, who came to participate. Also, a special recognition to Martha Jenkins who escorted the visiting dignitary all day on the behalf of the OCGOP...
